Now that the Republicans have come out with their pledge to cut taxes, reduce spending and all the things they should have been doing in the first place, here is my reaction. They had better live up to it.

Most of us still remember the Contract With America that launched the Republicans into control of Congress in 1994. It was a great thing. The problem was that the Republicans didn't live up to their promises. They went to Washington, were schooled by the old hands and told what was expected of them. They learned the system and decided they liked it. In short, they themselves became corrupted by the system and forgot what they had promised the folks back home.
Now the Republican party is reacting to the tea party movement. The establishment is starting to realize that the movement may be stronger than they are as witnessed by electoral events in Florida, Alaska, Utah, and Delaware. Now comes this pledge, which I welcome.
I just hope that the party realizes that if they are put in power come November, the voters will hold their feet to the fire this time. In other words, if they don't do what their constituents expect them to do (keep their campaign promises), then the next time around, the tea party will become the Tea Party.
So basically their pledge is to return us to the Bush Administration policies that got us into this mess in the first place? Give me a break! No thanks.
ReplyDeleteOh stop it! Whatever negative numbers Bush left behind, Obama is tripling them with this insane spending.
ReplyDeleteGary, I already said that Republicans can't do math, and now I'm disappointed to see that you, a rational, college educated conservative, can't either.
ReplyDeleteBush came to office with the national debt at $5 trillion.
Bush left office with the national debt at $10 trillion to $11 trillion. Obama is on track to raise the national debt to about $13 trillion.
Last I checked, 3 times 10 = 30, not 13.
Obama has increased the debt by, at most 33%, not 300%.
The Republican pledge is to reduce taxes, balance the budget, and refrain from cutting unspecified programs that they know voters are dearly attached to. Again, the math is entirely missing.
When I see someone brave and honest enough to say, this is what it take to balance the budget, generate a surplus, and begin reducing our dangerously bloated national debt, in detail, I will seriously consider voting for him, or her. It will take tax increases and program cuts, and both will be painful.
Bill Clinton, however, showed that it can be done without disastrous implications. And GWB, immature little boy that he was, instead of continuing to generate surpluses and paying down the debt, ran up huge deficits and doubled the debt, with the connivance of the same Republicans now running the party.
You call these liars CONSERVATIVES?????
Gary, watch this short clip and then tell me that the GOP isn't just offering the same old failed policies.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous,
ReplyDeleteI posted it. Unlike you, however, I don't get my news from Jon Stewart.
Hey! Did'ya catch Colbert testifying before Congress today???
What a joke!
OK Gary, you've expressed your contempt for Stewart and Colbert. Now, about the numbers please?
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, don't you know that if you watch Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, that automatically means that you get ALL your news from those sources? It doesn't matter if they make a good point. It doesn't matter if they use facts to show what a bunch of buffoons the Republicans are! (Which isn't to say that they don't make the Democrats look like a bunch of goofs as well.) If you watch them, then it's not humanly possible for you to watch anything else!
ReplyDeleteSeriously, Gary. This is the same game you do with me. Instead of addressing the point, you switch it over to accusing the person of only getting their news through comedy shows. I've said it before, and I'll say it again - those shows are only funny if you're already informed about what's going on in the world.
How about just addressing the fact that Stewart completely nailed them and they're saying WORD FOR WORD the same crap that they've been saying for years?
As for Colbert's appearance - THAT was some real satire. Of course, you think that Ann Coulter is satire, so I'm not shocked that you don't know how to deal with the points that he made.
