Norm Finkelstein Calls Israel "Lunatic State"

It is truly amazing to watch the reaction of the "world community" to Israel's interception of the Gaza flotilla and the killing of a bunch of pipe and knife-wielding "humanitarian activists". Here we have the UN Security Council calling an emergency session so they can issue yet another condemnation of Israel. What else is new? Over the years, the UN has condemned tiny Israel more than all other nations combined.

Of course, in Europe, everybody is running out on the streets to protest against Israel. It seems Europeans have learned how to say, "Death to Israel" in Arabic and Farsi.

Then there is Grease, (yes Grease)that old country in the Mediterranean with a great past, miserable present and no future. As we speak, thousands of Greasers are joining with their foreign panhandlers in the streets to protest Israel-now that they have spent themselves complaining about their own lousy country. Here you have a nation that cannot run its own affairs and they are telling Israel how to run theirs.

Then there is the Great Independent Scholar with a PHD from Princeton, Norman Finkelstein, last seen two weeks ago at UC-Irvine making a fool out of himself. Guess who is seeking out his views on the issue? None other than Russia Today out of Moscow, who interviewed Finklestein from New York.

Note how Finkelstein, whom many consider a "lunatic", now calls Israel a "lunatic state". Note how he talks about Israel "threatening its neighbors, Iran and Lebanon". Excuse me, but isn't Iran the nation whose leader has threatened to wipe Israel off the map? As for Lebanon, isn't that where Hezbollah is firmly entrenced? Didn't Hezbollah's leader recently state that all Jews should gather in Israel so they wouldn't have to hunt them down world-wide?

But I digress.

Isn't it also ironic that Finkelstein is relating all this to a Russian TV audience. If I remember, Russia has quite a history of "threatening its neighbors". If you talk to people in Georgia and Ukraine, they will tell you that Russia is still a threat to them.

Oh, the righteous indignation of the "world community"-whose moral compass has been turned upside down. Here you have a tiny country the size of New Jersey, surrounded by some twenty Arab nations with hundreds of millions of people who want to annihilate them. But as soon as Israel engages in any self-defense, the "world community" is outraged.

  1. Not sure how it was "self defense" when it was Israel who provoked the whole incident by handling the situation so poorly.

Can Israel ever do anything wrong in your eyes? I'm going to guess that the answer is no.

  2. Anonymous,

Clearly, it was botched in the sense that the soldiers landing on the ship were not adequately prepared.

In terms of PR, it is a disaster because the world doesn't respect any right of self defense for Israel.

But if you are civilians and your ship is being boarded by a Navy or you are confronted by the police, you don't try to attack them with pipes, knives and take their guns away. You can only expect to be shot.

  3. Oh and you asked me how I might have handled things differently: ever heard of stun grenades or tear gas? Apparently this unit hadn't!

I am sure that there will be a lot of criticism because the troops had some sort of non-lethal weapons they were using and had to resort to their sidearms in self defense.

It looks to me that the IDF followed a policy of trying to avoid bloodshed. Then they were attacked with bats, knives and had some weapons taken away from them.

Trust me. In that situation, it is justified to respond with lethal force. How much do you want to seond guess those soldiers? Would you second guess your own soldiers in this manner? Those were not peace-loving humanitaians on board that Turkish ship.

  5. I think you missed my point. What I am trying to say is that there were other ways of handling the situation rather than just blindly dropping onto the ship completely unprepared. For example, dropping stun grenades and/or tear gas onto the ship first to help reduce the level of possible violence, and thus ensuring the safety of both the civilians and the soldiers. That's just off the top of my head and I'm no military expert.

And I'm not second-guessing the individual soldiers. They were put in a lousy situation and I can't really blame them for panicking and defending themselves. Who I am second-guessing are the clueless higher-ups and the suicidal, right-wing government currently in power that put those soldiers in such a lousy situation.

It's too soon to make a final judgement. We haven't really heard any first-hand accounts from the boat people, only from Israeli officials. There will surely be more video coming out (the Israeli video strangely stops as a soldier raises his gun). But what I will say right now is this: as a best case scenario, this was a completely bungled and disastrous response to the ship trying to run the blockade, and Israel deserves all of the bad PR they're getting from the fiasco; as a worst case scenario it was an outright massacre. I'm not saying which it is yet, but those are the two ends of the range of possibilities, I believe.

  6. Anonymous,

The method will surely be criticized, but the people on that boat were not "peace activists".

You should also understand that the Free Gaza movement and the International Solidarity Movement are dedocated to the destruction of Israel. More to come on this.

  7. When the Mexican army shot down unarmed students (who may have been throwing rocks for all I know) in 1968, it was called a massacre. When IDF shoot down angry protesters who threw chairs rather than submit, it is called legitimate self defense. This fleet may have been intended as a provocation. If so, Israel delivered one into their hands. Stupid.

Finkelstein sounds like a man who is better at characterization than at sober assessment of facts.

  8. Siarlys,

Threw chairs? (Yes, I did see one chair thrown) I also saw an Israeli soldier thrown over the rail and others being attacked by two or three guys with pipes and bats. I got news for you. At that point, deadly force is called for in self defense.

  9. PS:

You have to see Finklestein in person to understand what an onery cuss he is. The man is a bully especially when he is dealing with college kids who ask critical questions. His discourse is usually riddled with insults towards those he does not like.

  10. College students need to learn how to make an ornery cuss look like a damn fool. Its part of growing up.
