The Violence in Bangkok

As one who lived for three years in Thailand in the 1970s, it pains me to see the deadly violence that is ripping through Bangkok. The Thais are noted for being a friendly, fun-loving and passive people. That is why the country is referred to as the Land of Smiles. Yet, below the surface, the potential for an explosion is there.

I experienced two coups when I was in Bangkok during the 70s, one of the most turbulent decades in Thai history. One involved serious and deadly violence at Thammasart University in Bangkok. Fortunately, things were resolved within days and life returned to normal. The influence of the King in stepping in and calming things down has been a blessing to the Thai people during his 60-year reign. Unfortunately, he is now in his eighties and in failing health. Looming on the horizon is his thuggish, playboy son, Prince Vajiralongkorn. If and when Vajiralongkorn ascends to the throne, I fear for Thailand's future and the future of the monarchy.
