Health Care-It All Comes Down to Who Can Be Bought

At last count, the Democrats need to convince a handful of their own holdouts to vote for the health care bill in the House of Representatives. If they thought they had the votes now, they would have held their vote. If one were truly naive, they would think that the Dems would be hard at work trying to convince the holdouts of the righteousness of the bill and why it is good for America.

Think again, o naive ones!

No, what this really comes down to is the carrot and the stick. If you look at the cases of Mary Landrieu in Louisiana and Ben Nelson in Nebraska, you know what the carrot is. (You have heard of the "Louisiana Purchase" and the "Cornhusker Kickback" haven't you?) I'm not sure what the stick is since a "yes" vote will probably end their careers.

Sadly, this tally will not hinge on the rightness or wrongness of this bill. It all hinges on backroom deals. Those Democrats who have indicated opposition, will only change their votes to "yes" because they have been given something.

Something for them-not for the American people.

It's enough to make you sick that something so huge hinges on a handful of backroom deals.

  1. And of course, there is absolutely no money changing hands between the insurance companies and the politicians who are standing in the way of health care! The motives of those guys are as pure as freshly fallen snow.

  3. My heart bleeds for them. Won't somebody think of these poor CEO's? Now they're going to have to buy some slightly smaller yachts!

  4. Lance,

As long as they make their money honestly, I really don't care how many yachts they have.

  5. As long as they make their money honestly...

Many of them don't - and that's the real problem.
