Thousands Arrested as Anarchy Reigns at UC-Irvine

(UCI website)

Well, not quite, but I got your attention, didn't I?

Yesterday, 17 were arrested at UCI in front of the chancellor's office. Something to do about janitorial jobs. It was the usual suspects, you know Student Worker and Bowlers Coalition for Peace Justice and More Beer or somebody like that.

What was the beef?

"Exploitive labor practices", an increase in financial aid for low income and undocumented students (that's illegal-alien students for all you UC Santa Cruz Community Studies majors-but I doubt UCI has any)and a bunch of other stuff.

Oh, and drop all charges and disciplinary proceedings against the "Irvine 11".

And also, gender-neutral restrooms!!

(OC Register)

"Heigh ho, heigh ho-it's off to jail they go"

Apparently, our human-rights heroes wanted to meet personally with Chancellor Michael Drake, but just like last time they demonstrated a few months back, Drake was "not in".

Dang! That's oh for two!

But not to worry. A wonderful time was had by all as protesters overturned garbage bins and blocked traffic on one of the university's main thoroughfares.

That brings the (actual) total of arrestees up to 28 during February alone on the heels of the disruption of the Israeli ambassador's speech on February 8th.

I remember the good old days, a simpler time, when Irvine was known as the "Safest City in America". Now, it's Crime City USA".

  1. The most important quote from the OC Register:

According to Lawhon, UCI has twice been asked by the union to hold off beginning the "insourcing" process, which would bring the jobs in-house at the university. As part of that process, UCI would do background checks, Lawhon said, not "citizenship" checks.

"There's a requirement that university employees have a background check. If you were not in the country legally, that would come up," Lawhon said.
