And Rush Limbaugh on Haiti

After hearing the news reports on Rush Limbaugh's radio comments on Haiti, I went to his website to get the full transcript (which you can do as well). Here is the part that is causing most of the firestorm.

Limbaugh: "Yes, I think in the Haiti earthquake, ladies and gentlemen -- in the words of Rahm Emanuel -- we have another crisis simply too good to waste. This will play right into Obama's hands. He's humanitarian, compassionate. They'll use this to burnish their, shall we say, "credibility" with the black community -- in the both light-skinned and dark-skinned black community in this country. It's made-to-order for them. That's why he couldn't wait to get out there, could not wait to get out there."

My reaction? Disgusting.

First of all, Limbaugh is wrong to use this tragedy as a talking point to criticize President Obama's reaction to the event or any other event. In the talk, he takes Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to task for her comment that Haiti's poverty is somehow the fault of the US. Fair enough, but this is hardly the time to argue that point. All that matters now is that we do what we can to help Haiti (which we are). No other discussion of Haiti matters now. What Limbaugh forgets is that in moments like these, we put politics aside and pitch in together. The reference back to the Harry Reid comment was gratuitous and uncalled for.

I have defended Limbaugh for many of his comments in the past but not now. Conservatives should disassociate themselves from these remarks, and Limbaugh should apologize to the President.
