Head of LA Dept of Water and Power Resigns
David Nahai
If you want an example of bureaucratic language of the art of pumping oneself up, read the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power press release below. This document is the letter of resignation of their head, David Nahai.

DWP employees reading Nahai's resignation letter
"Bold steps...phenomenal results"
If DWP only had uniforms.
Of course, if you are a resident of Los Angeles, you know that the DWP is nothing to write home about. Under Nahai's tenure, the agency has been a cesspool of waste, rising prices, mismanagement, and excess salaries and goodies for DWP employees, not to mention using its excess money collected from residents to kick back to city government. In addition, the city's pipes are crumbling-as they usually do when they've been in the ground about a century.
And this real estate man turned environmentalist turned city hack writes himself up as if he were the greatest man of the century. Much of his 4-page-tribute-to-himself letter reminds me of those annual government employee fitness evaluations. Here's an example:
"Under my administration, DWP has taken seriously its role as a direct employer as well as a catalyst for increased economic activity and job creation..."
Translation from bureaucratese: "I know its a category we are evaluated on, but we haven't done much in this area, and we'll try to do better."
In DEA, it would have read: "Agent Jones is aware of the importance of recruiting informants and making cases." Translation: "He hasn't recruited informants or made cases this year, and I expect him to do better next year."
At any rate, not to worry about Mr Nahai's future employment. He is going to work as a sr. advisor to the....
CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE
He will be missed.
I see that things haven't changed since I lived in LA.
ReplyDeleteWater and Power has always been a cesspool of corruption. The day they actually get an incorruptible in there, the place will collapse.
Raise your glasses in a toast to the next Head. May he steal only 1/2 of what the last one did.
