Fresh on the heels of a failed deshelving operation of Trader Joe's Israeli products, the North American left has failed in its efforts to boycott the on-going 2009 Toronto Film Festival-specifically its features on films and directors from Tel Aviv.
And who are the leading voices of this boycott? None other than Jane Fonda, Danny Glover, leftist writers Naomi Klein and Alice Walker. Frankly, I had never heard of Klein, but it seems she is all the rage among the feminists and assorted leftists of the world. Klein especially seems to have a problem with capitalism-even though she must be making a lot of money-but I digress.
However, Glover and Fonda I know well. It never seems to amaze me how some folks can be so incensed about so-called "human rights abuses" on the part of the US and Israel, but blind to abuses by leaders on the left like those of.......
Venezuela
and.....
North Viet Nam.
For those of you UC-Santa Cruz Community Studies majors, Danny Glover has decided why should he travel to rainy Toronto when he has the sunny skies of Caracas and the warm embrace of that great Democrat (no pun intended) Hugo Chavez. Never mind that Chavez has closed down opposition papers, supported a murderous rebel group in Colombia (FARC) and instigated anti-Jewish violence in Venezuela as his own special way of protesting Israel's policy of defending itself from Palestinian terrorists.
That's right.
Then there is Fonda, who, during the Viet Nam war, showed which side she supported by traveling to Hanoi, having her picture taken on an anti-aircraft gun, making radio broadcasts for the North Vietnamese and visiting POW camps, where US prisoners who refused to meet with her were given extra beatings and torture. In short, Jane Fonda was an American traitor.
That's right.
Now these two bozos are linking hands with the other anti-Israel activists to try to shut down the showing of Israeli features at the Toronto Film Festival in the name of "human rights". Except that it hasn't worked.
Apparently, when news of the boycott came out-thanks to the loud mouths of the boycotters themselves, people who cared about freedom of expression bought up all the on-line tickets to the Israeli features. Presto! Just like at Trader Joe's when Israeli products flew off the shelves, the success of the Tel Aviv features was assured.
As for boycotts themselves, I am not a boycott organizer myself. Yet, over the years, I have exercised my own personal boycott of movies featuring certain dopey actors like Fonda, Glover, Sean Penn and numerous others. (Hell, I hardly ever go to any movies anymore.) I figure, why not keep my own money in my own pocket rather than give it to the likes of Fonda-the American traitor?
"Hey, Fousesquawk! Ya wanna go to that new Jane Fonda and Danny Glover movie tonight?"
"No thanks, Bob. I think I'll stay home tonight and stick my
*&%#@^# in a meat grinder instead."
That's right.
