  1. Reminds me of the old Soviet Union. They used the same tactics too. As did our old friend Hitler.

  2. Findalis, you are giving me grey hair. I don't understand why everything that happens has to be related to Hitler or Stalin. This sounds so boring by now.
It is sad enough that we live in a time where extreme security measures have to be taken when the President appears. Obama didn't start that.
Maybe some tactics of Hitler and Stalin need to be used so people can walk the streets without being mugged, killed, robbed, kidnapped, held captive in backyards etc. I guess you haven't read but a lot of people in Russia want Stalin back, and though it is never said in public in Germany, you hear a lot of people say :this would not have happened under Hitler.
As I said before, move forward because the problems of yesterday are not the same as those of today.

  3. What exactly is so offensive about this? A speech about taking responsibility for themselves? Shudder! Hopefully he won't say something really subversive and tell them to brush their teeth after meals!

Sounds like a good assignment and an opportunity for discussion. And I'd say the exact same thing if it came from George Bush.

Now, if part of his speech goes on to push his political agenda, I'd have a real problem with it - whether it's an agenda I agree with or not.

  4. {Stepping onto the soapbox}

Ingrid, history will repeat itself unless one remembers the lessons of the past. Hitler, Stalin, Castro, Mao, etc... all use these same methods to indoctrinate the youth of their countries to their ideology. Children don't have the ability to fight such indoctrination, the idea of belonging to a "special group" whether it be Scouts, Church Youth Groups, Hitler Youth, Young Pioneers, or Red Guards is thrilling to the young.

Each dictator has their "Cult of Personality" that the youth will be the vanguard of. Liberties and freedoms die as the children become the spies of the state.

All this happened in the past, and what is scaring a lot of us is that we are seeing the same "Cult of Personality" form for Obama. No US President has ever had that before. Not Washington or Lincoln. And they were the most beloved of our Presidents.

We have a saying here in the US by Benjamin Franklin:
"He who trades his liberty for security deserves neither liberty or security."

In other words, Freedom is too precious to trade for the streets you want. I would rather have unsafe streets than lose just one of my Freedoms. Which one would you give up Ingrid for such security?

It is only by Constant Vigilance that we remain a Free People. The Russians can have their Stalin, purges and no liberty. I prefer Reagan, Nixon, Kennedy, Truman, Eisenhower, LBJ, Ford, Carter, and George H.W. Bush to Stalin and your "security" any day of the week.

    [I will now step off of the soapbox}

  5. Anybody who compares what's going on now to Hitler, Stalin, etcetera doesn't know jack squat about any of those dictators.

  6. Lance,

Actually, I know quite a bit about Stalin and Hitler. I'm sort of an amateur scholar on the Third Reich, and I know Hitler's life backwards and forwards. I learned a lot about Stalin when I was writing my book on the languages of the former Soviet Union. I've actually visited the house where he was born and seen his grave if that means anything.

The point you make is that one cannot compare anything or anything to Hitler or Stalin because they were the worst and most destructive dictators in history. That is true.

Yet, those who know history can sound a warning when this administration (which contains some true radicals) resorts to techniques that remind us of non-Democratic leaders. Trying to teach kids in school to revere the head of state as an individual is one of them. Both Hitler and Stalin did that, and there is nothing wrong in pointing that out.

Wait until they start taking control of the media (as if they needed to). What I mean is when they start taking actions against Fox, talk-radio (Fairness Doctrine) and conservative blogs (Cyber Security Act of 2009). Hey, they already know who I am (little ol' me) Why do you think I was getting those emails from the White House?

  7. Of course, there was nothing about the previous administration that was reminiscent of Hitler and Stalin.

And if you meant this seriously:

Why do you think I was getting those emails from the White House?

Then you're really too far gone.

"Of course, there was nothing about the previous administration that was reminiscent of Hitler and Stalin."

    Can you be specific?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Can you be specific?

Wiretapping and torture, maybe? Oh, I forgot, that was all in the name of freedom, so it's okay.

My point is that you can play this stupid game with anything. To really try and make comparisons might show that you know the history, but you clearly don't *understand* the history if you're making these connections. (And yes, it's overblown when liberals accuse conservatives of doing it.)

  10. Wiretapping and torture?

Which torture, the water boarding? Or the yelling at prisoners? Or blowing cigar smoke in their faces? If you wnat to learn a few things about real torture ask the enemies we are fighting who cut off the heads of their prisoners.

Also, if we are still making comparisons to Stalin and Hitler, you know full well why they tortured. To defeat their political opponents-not save innocent lives in the wake of 9-11.

As for the nsa intercepts, thank God they did it. What is so objectionable about listening in to conversations of al qaeda suspects overseas when they call people here in the US- You know, "ordinary Americans just like you and me".

    Good grief.

  11. It's amazing the mental backflips you're willing to make to defend the "conservative" position. And yet when Obama wants to tell kids to take responsibility for their education, you act like it's the second coming of Uncle Joe.

All you're doing is repeating propaganda, and as usual, you don't cite any actual facts to back up your position.

Do you really think that the Nazis and Stalinists didn't have all sorts of nicer sounding ways of justifying what they were doing?

This whole thing makes me sad. I used to think that you were at least reasonable when I disagreed with you. Most of the time when I read what you write nowadays, I just shake my head in disbelief that anybody could believe the things you write. You claim that you're doing fine and that you're happy, but your words indicate that you're a very frightened person.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Good grief, Lance, you and that word "facts" that you like to throw out without quoting facts themselves.

Why did the DOE issue "suggested" lesson plans to the schools that the kids would write an essay or something asking themselves, "how I can help President Obama"?

What is the purpose of that film with a bunch of Hollywood types pledging "to support, Barack Obama" or "pledging to support the president"? What's that all about? Those are facts, Lance.

What you don't seem to grasp is that Obama and his minions are trying to mix loyalty to Barack Obama the person with loyalty to America and loyalty to the common good. That's what dictators do, if you didn't know it.

Other facts that are troubling? The govt takoever of GM and Chrysler. The govt takeover of the banking sytem, and the attempted govt takeover of health care-1/6th of our GNP.

Those are facts, Lance. The appointment of Marxists like Van Jones and Mark Lloyd to positions of power in the govt are also facts, Lance.

You want another fact? Obama is a socialist, and he is trying to implement a socialist system in America.

BTW, the fact is that I'm having a ball with this blog. And I'm obviously having much more fun writing it than you are reading it.

  13. Good grief, Lance, you and that word "facts" that you like to throw out without quoting facts themselves.

I'm not the one asserting a claim, Gary. You make assertions left and right without backing up what you're saying. And when you do use facts, you use them the same way Oliver Stone did in JFK - very selectively to get your pre-determined conclusion.

  14. Lance,

"Gary. You make assertions left and right without backing up what you're saying."

This is getting like arguing balls and strikes in a baseball game. Give me an example of what you are talking about. What claim have I made that I can't back up? What claim am I literally making up out of whole cloth?
