The Michael Jackson saga continues to get more sordid as each new day passes. Now his sister, LaToya Jackson, is accusing someone of having murdered Michael (as if the years of drug use had nothing to do with it.) Aside from that, however, more information is coming out that casts the city of Los Angeles in an embarrassing light.

It was reported today on the John and Ken radio talk show in LA (KFI 640 AM)that on the day of the Staples Center event last week, police were involved in a high-speed chase on three freeways with a suspect in a murder-kidnapping case. The chase apparently ended in southeast LA with the suspect barricaded in a house. At that point, pursuing officers called for an LAPD SWAT team. Problem was that LAPD had no SWAT team available. They were all tied up with the Jackson event. According to John and Ken, SWAT officers were involved in transporting the hearse to Staples Center and doing a bait and switch with another hearse after the event so that reporters and fans would not be able to follow the correct hearse to wherever Jackson's casket (which we don't even know whether it carried the remains or not) was headed. In other words, LAPD SWAT could not respond to a clear, life-threatening situation because they were tied up with the Jackson hearse(s). As a result, the LA County Sheriff's Department had to send a SWAT team to take care of the incident in LAPD's jurisdiction.

What an irresponsible use of LAPD resources.

To make matters worse, LA's playboy mayor, Tony Villar, aka Antonio Villaraigosa returned to the city from Africa, where he was romping around with his latest flame, local news anchor, former Miss USA and self-advertised "American Beauty", Lu Parker (He was in Africa during the whole Jackson fiasco.) He promptly announced today that LA would definitely pay for the Staples Center event, calling it erroneously a funeral, which it was not. He also criticized his staff for setting up a website asking for private donations to pay for the event. "No Sir", says Villar. "LA is a world class city," and it would be ridiculous to ask AEG and the Jackson family to pay for the "funeral".

First of all, as one who was born and raised in LA, it is not a world class city. It was a world-class city when I was growing up there. Now it is world-class only in crime, traffic, drugs, gangs, illegal aliens and moronic government at City Hall. The city is currently running a $550 million deficit, but it's OK to ask the tax-payers to pay for this obscene tribute to Michael Jackson to the tune of $3-4million. Of course, everybody is trying to duck the blame. The mayor's office says that the website asking for donations was the idea of city councilwoman Jan Perry, who was acting mayor while Tony was playing hide the baloney in Africa. (They collected $35,000. What will become of those funds is anybody's guess.) Another councilwoman, Janice Hahn, is claiming that the city made money in tourist dollars for hotels and restaurants.

The fact is that what took place at the Staples Center last week was a promotional event by AEG on behalf of itself and the Jackson family. AEG had lost a ton of money when Jackson died because they had been sponsoring his planned 50 concert blowout in London, and now they are trying to recoup some of the money. It is unconscionable that tax-payers should have to foot the bill for what was a private interest event.

The Jackson lovefest was a waste and misuse of city funds and resources. In private business, those responsible for such a fiasco would be fired. (Villaraigosa/Villar was just recently re-elected by a wide margin.) Once again, the loser is the tax-payer.
