Jimmy Carter Breaks With His Church-Good Riddance
Jimmy Carter with one of his human rights comrades-in-arms, Hugo Chavez
This week, that pest Jimmy Carter made news again, this time leaving the Southern Baptist Church because they refuse to ordain women pastors and they preach that women should be subservient to their husbands.
That's all well and good, (I am not here to defend the Southern Baptist Church.)but let's examine this statement made by the hapless former president:
"At their most repugnant, the belief that women must be subjugated to the wishes of men excuses slavery, violence, forced prostitution, genital mutilation and national laws that omit rape as a crime. But it also costs many millions of girls and women control over their own bodies and lives, and continues to deny them fair access to education, health, employment and influence within their own communities.
The impact of these religious beliefs touches every aspect of our lives. They help explain why in many countries boys are educated before girls; why girls are told when and whom they must marry; and why many face enormous and unacceptable risks in pregnancy and childbirth because their basic health needs are not met..."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First of all, Mr Carter has his churches and religions confused. It is not the Southern Baptist Church that engages in slavery, forced prostitution, genital mutilation or laws that excuse rape. It is not the Southern Baptist Church that takes away women's rights to education and employment. It is not his church he is talking about, nor is it his country.
If Mr Carter objects that his church puts men on a higher plane than women that is fine. Pity, however, that this "great champion of human rights for women" does not turn his attention to the parts of the world where women are, indeed, second-class citizens, where women are stoned to death for adultery-or merely being found in the company of men not their husbands, where women are murdered in so-called "honour killings" by their husbands or brothers-with little or no criminal punishment, where women are indeed subjected to forced genital mutilation, or where women who are condemned to death are deprived of their virginity by rape-so that it will be permissible to execute them under law.
That is where Mr Carter should direct his outrage. But he won't, and we all know the reason why he won't, don't we? Mr Carter has a lot of friends and allies in the Middle East, many of whom contribute millions to his "peace center" or whatever he calls it. No, Mr Carter cannot even mention who the real perpetrators are. Instead, he lists a couple of examples, like genital mutilation, within a context that would suggest to the totally ignorant observer that he is talking about the Southern Baptist Church.
Jimmy Carter is, as always, a fool. He was a fool in the White House, and he is a fool now. He is also a deceptive fool. Good riddance for the Southern Baptist Church.
It wasn't Jimmy Carter who said that wives should be submissive to their husbands, not to every man, neither did the Southern Baptist Church decreed it, it was God himself who said that, He also said that husbands should love their wives like their own flesh. Now if they did, they would not rape, mutilate, beat, circumsize, stone etc. their wives.
ReplyDeleteIf you quote the Bible, than do it all the way, don't pick and choose, because this is what got everyone into trouble, misquotes and half truths.
You also cannot call yourself a Christian if you don't believe everything Jesus said, because he didn't tell any lies.
PS: I don't understand what you have against Jimmy Carter's objection to the Southern Baptists allowing women to become pastors. That is biblically correct, women should not stand above men.
ReplyDeleteNow to the conditions in third world countries, what do you want Jimmy Carter to do about that? Just because he has friends there doesn't mean he approves of certain behaviour.
I LOVE JIMMY CARTER.
Ingrid,
ReplyDeleteAs I said before, it is not for me to defend the baptist Church, I just think if Carter is looking at religious entities that violate women's rights, he is looking at the wrong place and ignoring that elephant in the room.
I remember when Carter was president. I voted against him twice. He was a terrible president who allowed our country to be humilated by Iran. He has been a horrible ex-president.
Aside from that, I love him too.
I think the Baptists are glad that Carter is gone. I wonder if he will find a new home at Rev. Wright's Church.
ReplyDeleteYeah, They can stand on the stage together and shout, "God Da-- America!"
ReplyDeleteYou two still don't understand. Jimmy Carter is a true Christian, of course Findalis wouldn't know what that is and you Gary should think about what it means to be one, but that takes time and effort to find out. You are both very ridiculous on that subject.
ReplyDeleteI lived in Iran from 77 to 79, and I did not feel that Jimmy Carter allowed the Iranians to humiliate us. This is too complex an issue to be flip about. I could write a book about the way Americans behaved in Iran, that was what was humiliating to some of us. Had nothing to do with Carter.
Sorry Ingrid, I disagree.
ReplyDeleteWhether Carter is a "true Christian " or not, I am not the one to judge.
I recall the hostage crisis well, and the way I see it is this:
A third rate country violated our embassy, ignored the international rules of diplocy and took innocent Americans hostage, kept them over a year, mistraeted them, threatened to put them on trial and execute them. It was an act of war, and Carter let them get away with it while wringing his hands, complaining to the feckless UN and sending a few helicopters on a "Mission Impossible" that only resulted in American deaths though designed so that no one would be harmed.
Give me a break.
Jimmy Carter was an incompetent boob, and yet he has the balls to go around criticizing his successors and his own country.
I need a drink!
I take offense with that Ingrid. I have met many Christians in my life. Men and women who risked their lives for their faith. Some who faced hardships for their beliefs. None who have acted like Carter has. If he had problems with the ordination of women he should have either left long ago or tried to change doctrine (I do believe that the Catholic Church refuses to ordain women too).
ReplyDeleteCarter is like many on the left, their actions hurt more than they help.
