Gary, I understand your outrage but I wonder, does anybody ever think just why those wretches become pirates? They are caught in a desperate situation, their fishing grounds have been destroyed and they have no other means of supporting themselves and their families. The ones pulling the strings are hiding and won't be brought to justice. So, lets hang the ones that get caught and forget about justice.
Who destroyed their fishing grounds? You mean there are no fish in that ocean? Interesting how those "poor fishermen" supplanted their fishing with an 80-150 million dollar kidnapping industry.
Sorry Ingrid. I lost my sympathy for the Somalis when they started killing the very people who were trying to feed them. Now we're bringing these bastards to the US as "refugees" where they refuse to assimilate, demand things from us (taxi drivers who refuse to carry passengers carrying alcohol, check-out clerks who refuse to check out customers buying pork, those that run off to join the Jihad, etc.)
I guess I'm just sick and tired of people playing us for suckers all the time.
Gary, you are talking about a problem in the US with the Somalis, something needs to be done on that end. I go along with you on that one. The international fishing fleets destroyed their fishing grounds. As I said, the real bad guys are not the pirates.
Oh the poor babies Ingrid. It is not their fault. It is the fault of others.
Give it a break! There are plenty of other ways to earn money. But we have to excuse the black and brown people from all responsibility because they are black and brown.
Remember this one fact.
If you are buying an item that is shipped internationally on the seas, you are paying more for the item thanks to the pirates.
I think that is a good enough reason to find their ports and wipe them out.
Have you ever heard of fish farming? Or asking the UN or even better the US for help via the Peace Corps and other economic aid we provide?
No first turn to piracy.
For 25 years we have been feeding Africa, it has done nothing but feed lazy people. Let us stop it immediately. Force them to either feed their people or actually pay for the food for their people, and not the luxuries they enjoy.
Sounds harsh, but let's look at the facts. Billions have been poured into Africa with no results-except fat bank accounts for dictators in Switzerland. The guy in Zaire whose name I can't recall was a classic example.
George W Bush poured more money into Africa to fight AIDS then any other president. He never got any credit for it.
Yet, we are still sending condoms to Africa, which nobody will wear. What are you going to do-put them on for them?
I don't have the answer for all of Africa's problems, but money isn't the answer.
Findalis, I don't even want to comment on your flippant remarks. Maybe you need to find out more about Africa and Somalia, and read up on why those people are in dire straits, and who is making money because of their actions, and how expensive things would be if they were stopped. Yes, give them a job. I haven't lately heard anything that heartless, racist and ignorant. Sorry.
Why should I care about Somalia or Africa in general? For 25 years we have been feeding their people while the leaders squander the aid and monies we send.
I prefer to spend it on poverty here at home. Have you ever been to Appalachia? I have, and no slum in any US cities compares to the poverty I have witnessed there.
There are Americans who live without indoor plumbing, electricity and any sort of heat in the winter. People without the basics in food and medicine. Poverty I never thought would exist here in the US.
Do any liberal groups work there? NO. These people aren't black or brown, but white. So according to those on the left, it is acceptable.
It is not acceptable! Now don't cry for Africa, cry for those Americans who live without here at home!
What exactly are WE supposed to do about what causes bandits in Somalia? We tried to alleviate starvation in Somali and what did we get in return? So that means that we should just throw up our hands and give up? I mean, you may be right, there might not even be anything that we can do. However, Ingrid (mom) is getting shot down for even suggesting it.
This is pretty typical of the conservative mindset - don't attack the problem at the root, just keep lopping off branches ad infinitum. And if anybody even asks the question, shoot them down without a second thought.
Findalis:
Why should I care about Somalia or Africa in general?Because they're human beings? You're a human (I assume).
Regarding the people in Appalachia, what exactly should we do there? I thought you conservatives were all about telling people to lift themselves up by the bootstraps. If Obama instituted a program there to help them out, you guys would be crying "socialism"! Why can't THEY just go out and get a job? They can shoot squirrels and sell them on the corner or something, right? (Please note the sarcasm.) I imagine that's just as likely as every Somali becoming a fisherman.
And I don't believe your assertion that nobody's doing anything there to help them. Sounds like one more of your "facts" that you just make up so you can make a dramatic point. (Another typical conservative tactic that a quick Google search quickly disproves.)
Why does having sympathy for Africans negate the possibility of having sympathy for our fellow Americans?
Gods...your complete lack of logical coherence is mind-boggling.
Oh wait! I do have an idea. Let's send in some foreign aid. How about some food shipments?I'm well aware of how that hasn't been working. There are advocates for Africa who have suggestions for reforming aid in such a way that it would work. Should we not even listen to them?
And regarding Findalis, I don't even care what she has to say anymore. After her statement on the other thread about how "every" Muslim group cheered 9/11, I'm not very certain that she's even sane - and I'm not saying that to be mean. She's not mentally well, and I hope she gets better.
What should we do about Appalachia Lance asks. All that we can. Instead of worrying whether some disadvantaged youth can afford a pair of $500 sneakers, put running water and sanitation in their homes. Or electricity. Or help with food.
This is what conservatives have been doing.
You won't see ACORN any where near the extreme poverty that is there. But you will find many conservative groups helping these folks rise up again. To pull oneself up by your bootlaces, one first must have boots and laces to use.
You forgot keelhauling. I choose that one, simply because I like the way it sounds.

Lance,
ReplyDeleteWhat's keelhauling?
Oh, I forgot one- sharkfeeding.
Here's a link.
ReplyDeleteActually, it sounds pretty barbaric. Forget I said that.

Ingrid,
ReplyDeleteWell, they sure found a great second career, didn't they?
There are plenty of other ways to earn money.I'm sorry, but that's just plain ignorant. What are they going to do? Get a job at the Somali McDonald's?
ReplyDeleteWhy does this have to be one or the other? Why can't we fight the pirates AND work on the problems that contribute to piracy in the first place?
Lance,
ReplyDeleteHow about we fight the pirates and NOT work on the "problems" that caused them in the first place.
What exactly are WE supposed to do about what causes bandits in Somalia? We tried to alleviate starvation in Somali and what did we get in return?
Frankly Lance, I don't give a rip about the problems in Somalia. They are their problems to solve. Not ours.
How's that for a politically correct reply?
Have you ever heard of fish farming? Or asking the UN or even better the US for help via the Peace Corps and other economic aid we provide?

Lance,
ReplyDeleteMy part of the answer (I'll let Findalis answer her part) is yes, when it comes to Somalia, I have thrown up my hands in the air and given up.
Oh wait! I do have an idea. Let's send in some foreign aid. How about some food shipments?
