  1. While "condoms for everybody" is obviously a strawman, I have to wonder how horrible of a thing that would be, considering how they're proven to prevent disease and unwanted pregnancies (and by that token - abortions).

Or do you believe the statistics that buffoons like Rush Limbaugh have to say about them?

  2. Lance,

I think condoms are the greatest idea since peanut butter, I just don't think that I should have to pay for them for others. What's next, hire bureaucrats to go around the world putting them on for people?

I have no idea what Rush Limbaugh said about them.

  3. What does that have to do with stimulating the economy. It should be in a health bill not an economic one.

No Gary, I want to pay for condoms and birth control. Give them away for free if we must, but not in an economic bill.

  4. Findalis makes a good point, but Gary, certainly you must realize that if we have a glut of unwanted children, you're going to be paying for them in some shape or form, right? I think that some condoms would be a hell of a lot cheaper.

  5. Lance,

My point was that we are paying for condom to be provided overseas in places like Africa.

  6. But it shouldn't be in a stimulus bill. That should be in a Health bill for the US and a foreign affairs bill for other nations.

There is too much "pork" in this bill that it cannot even be held in the hands of an Orthodox Jew.

Health issues, education issues, etc should be in their own bills, not this one.

  7. Honestly, I just can't get upset about that. It can only help their situation over there - ultimately making their societies less susceptible to extremist idealogies that we might find ourselves combatting later.

Again, I'd see it as an investment, if anything.

  8. Lance,

Let me make sure I got this right. Giving people condoms is going to make them less susceptible to extremist ideologies?

And every time I hear that word investment, I know the tax man cometh.

  9. Findalis,

Sorry, I cannor justify US tax-pyers subsidizing condoms for people in the third world. Food and medicine, sure, but not condoms.

  10. I see condoms as a way to bring down the AIDS infection rate. In Uganda for example over 90% of the population is infected. Think of what the infection rate would be if we shipped condoms there in the first place?

I know that they should keep it in their pants, but you tell a man that in many lands and they laugh at you. It isn't macho. I guess slow dying is more macho.

  11. Lance,

They won't wear condoms in Africa. What are you going to do-go over there and put it on for them?

  12. Well, it's a pretty big leap, I know. But extremist idealogies tend to take root amongst the poor and uneducated. (Of course, there are exceptions.)

As for me putting it on them - of course, some education would have to be included with the condoms.

You say that you're okay with food and aid. I see condoms as being part of the whole "aid" part.
