Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Juan Abel Escalante (27) was shot to death early Saturday morning as he left for work at the LA County Jail. To date, there have been no arrests, and there are no known suspects though a white four-door car is thought to be involved.
Escalante, who was a US Army reservist and a 21/2 year Sheriff's Department veteran leaves behind a wife and three children.
At this point, the motive for the slaying is speculation, but it is possible that his job as a guard at the LA County jail may have played a role, and that the murder may have been gang-related. The area where the shooting occurred, Cypress Park, is infested with street gangs.
The murder is being investigated by the LAPD. We will follow the investigation.
