Today, an Egyptian man, who identified himself as "Christiano" took a guard hostage at knife point inside Milan's famed cathedral (Duomo). Police responded and a tense confrontation ensued in which police tried to convince the man to drop the knife and let his hostage go. After several minutes, the police rushed the man and he was subdued.

The Italian newspaper, Il Giornale, has the standoff captured on video, and we are in the process of translating it into English sub-titles. In the meantime, we are posting it now since this incident occurred today. Most of the back and forth between the suspect and police is unintelligible, but one hostage negotiator is close to the video camera, and his words are clear. We will translate what we can and get it out as soon as possible.

*Update: The suspect's full name is Mohamed Zin Elaabdin Elhosary Mahmoud, 26 years old, an Egyptian with a residence permit in Italy, as reported by Il Giornale.
