Police in Melbourne, responding to a hostage situation, have killed the hostage taker. One innocent man was killed by the suspect, Yacqub Khayre, who was known to the police having been previously charged in a plot to attack an army base. Three policemen were also wounded in the exchange of gunfire, but their wounds are not considered life -threatening.
