Rollins College Professor Resigns

Areej Zufari, the Muslim professor who ignited a controversy when she told a Christian student in class that Jesus Christ was never crucified, has resigned from Rollins College. The back and forth between her and the student led to the latter's suspension-and subsequent  reinstatement.

I would never condone threats against Zufari, if true, but her classroom comments were unacceptable in terms of professional conduct. You just don't use your position in the classroom to tell the believer of any religion that their beliefs are untrue. I never would have done that to my Muslim students.

Her resignation is welcome news.

I'm disappointed in Rollins College. They should have fired her. First of all, there's the offense she gave to Christians, who, the last time I checked, were still the majority in the US and in this community.

Had a non-Muslim teacher told a Muslim student in class that Mohammad made up the Koran himself (Muslims believe it to be the words of Allah), that teacher would have been disciplined or fired.

Gary, I thought you said that a non-Muslim teacher who told a Muslim student in class that Mohammad made up the Koran himself SHOULD be disciplined or fired?

DV appears to lack a basic civic education in U.S. constitution, laws and traditions. It is entirely irrelevant that Christians are the majority in the US. What is relevant is that a teacher should not, as Gary said, be using her or his position in the classroom to denigrate the religious faith of any student.

That's what I said.

That's what I thought you said.
