Yes, Virginia, Apostasy From Islam Is Punishable By Death

Hat tip Vlad Tepes

Don't take my word for it. Introducing Imam Sheharyar Shaikh of the Islamic Center of Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Here he sets the record straight-well, almost straight.

I am no expert on Jewish law, but I am unaware of any case of a Jew being "executed" for leaving the faith. Nor am I an expert on the Bible, but I know Christians don't have to fear being killed for leaving the faith. Apostasy happens often in the two faiths. Muslims who leave the faith, however, are subject to the death penalty either in countries like Saudi Arabia or by others including families.

When the imam introduces "treason" into the equation, most sensible people know there is a difference between treason against one's own country and treason against a religion, which we in the West do not criminalize. I believe there are some Muslim religious leaders or scholars who would ignore apostasy but not by those who publicly criticize Islam. To them, that represents treason. To others, mere apostasy is treason.

So is Islam a religion of peace? This tells you all you need to know.

There is no "Pope" of Islam, therefore, any idiot can make a pronouncement. In a twisted way, its rather Protestant. If one Christian pastor in Georgia burns a Quran, does that mean Christians are required to burn Qurans?
