Two Jewish Religious Organizations Criticize the Iran Deal

Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America and Rabbinical Council of America have issued a joint statement expressing their criticism of the Iran nuclear deal. This comes after they have examined the details.

It remains to be seen how the various and very diverse Jewish communities will react to this deal and how they will communicate their feelings to their elected representatives in Congress.

*Update: Here is an article by Lori Lowenthal Marcus in the Jewish Press that reports the reactions of the major US Jewish organizations to the deal. You will note that J Street is positive while the Jewish Federations of North America are straddling the fence.

Then there is this: Christians and Jews are coming together July 22 with a demand to Stop Iran. However, among the Jewish organizations you will not see J Street or the Jewish Federations of North America. Among the Christian organizations you will not see the Presbyterian Church of North America.

The slogan "Stop Iran Now" is called powerless posturing. Iran is a nation with a population of 75 million, a well trained, motivated, military force, and a population that, whatever they think of their current government, is highly nationalistic. Crushing Iran is not like swatting a fly.

There are not sufficient people in either the USA or Israel who are sufficiently committed to really "stopping Iran" to make the necessary sacrifices. Ulysses S. Grant is reputed, with some empirical reason, to have crushed the Army of Northern Virginia by simply accepting that at almost any casualty rate, eventually the confederacy would have no soldiers an the federal government would still have someone standing.

Are you ready for 75 million casualties? Five million? What's it worth to you?

If you're not ready to put your chips on the table, don't talk nonsense.

We can HURT Iran some, and they are willing to give us SOME of what we want to relieve the pain. May I remind you of a conversation between S.I. Hayakawa and William F. Buckley, Jr., where Hayakawa asserted "You don't negotiate from a position of weakness"??? Buckley accurately replied, of course you do, if you are in a position of sufficient strength to dictate the outcome, you don't bother to negotiate.

We're not. Face it, we're just not.
