"Burn the American Flag" Event

Hat tip College Insurrection and Legal Insurrection

This is more than disturbing. It is outrageous.

As CI points out, burning the American flag is considered protected speech. My response is this: I don't care what cause you are espousing, and I don't care what ethnic group you may belong to. If this is the way you feel about your flag and your country, you should leave the US and find your ideal society elsewhere. We will not miss you.

I guess I am just being dense yet again, but I have never really understood why flag burning is protected speech while cross-burning is a hate crime/act of terrorism.

Seems to me that the two activities are much more similar than different. If anything, flag burning is worse since it involves contempt for an entire country, culture, and way of life, while cross-burning, by definition, similarly concerns only a much smaller target group.

Something like chicken fighting and dog fighting in reverse, activities which are essentially more different than similar in many if not most ways?? Just curious.

* I am posting this for Miggie who is having trouble posting it.

"Don't forget we fought a war and lost something' like 600,000 men to free the
slaves. This should remembered whenever there is a riot against the police over
some incident in a black neighborhood.,,,that is a lot of restitution"

I hope we get a decent President next time who will cut off aid to any country
that burns our flag.

Forgot to complete my thought. DUHHHHH!!! Point was, while flag burning and cross-burning are quite similar but usually treated differently, chicken and dog fighting are fairly different but are usually treated similarly (both felonies around here).

elwood the inchoate raises the question of distinction without a difference to unprecedented levels of confusion.

But as to flag burning, I've always had a sense that burning the flag is not subject to criminal prosecution, but if it inspires bystanders to kick your ass, well, that's sort of to be expected. Same legal principle as "fighting words."
