Plausible scenario:

Jewish student goes up to JP table, screaming epithets like terrorist, someone standing nearby slaps him and he falls down, screams epithets, staff of table realize this looks bad for their cause, begins damage control, student who got slapped realizes this is a great opening for attack, cries foul.

Everyone casts themselves as innocent and rational, opponent as anything but, and most of the accusations being traded are more or less accurate.

General danger to Jewish students going to class, walking in or out of dorms or student union, minimal to none.

This is not a proven factual account, just a rather likely chronology consistent with available reports to date.
