The Limits of Free Speech According to Ban Ki Moon
Ban Ki Moon
UN chief Ban Ki Moon has weighed in on the video and the French magazine cartoons with a statement to the effect that free speech has its limits.
This is why we need to be vigilent in the face of the Organization of Islamic Cooperatiuon's efforts to get a defamtion of religion resolution through the UN. What Ban (a Korean) does not realize is that in the US, even offensive speech is protected. We don't have to agree with the speech, and it may offend us, but we can't go around arresting people for it.
Of course, we don't see the Egyptians prosecuting the clerics who publicly damn Christians and Jews, but when it comes to Islam, let's arrest everybody and give them the death penalty. Not in our country. We tolerate offensive speech against Christians, especially Catholics and Jews day in and day out. We can respond. We can criticize. Nobody has to support video makers or French magazines that publish offensive cartoons. Prosecute them?
Not in America.
Beware the UN.
