Al Sharpton's Reclaim the Dream Speech and the Beck Rally

While Glenn Beck was leading a rally at the Lincoln Memorial today, Al Sharpton was leading his own across town in response. These are just excerpts below, but note the "we vs. them" tone of his remarks.

As for the Beck "Restoring Honor" rally, reports so far indicate it was peaceful and upbeat. It also appears a whole lot of folks showed up. It appears there were no objectionable statements made by the speakers, no violence, no threats, just a peaceful rally with lots of people.

What's wrong with that?

Indeed, what was the objection to this event? That it was on the same date when Martin Luther King (one of Beck's heroes, by the way) gave his "I have a dream" speech on the same site? Does that make it off limits?

"But we don't like Glenn Beck."

And?

I can't wait to see and hear what Keith Olbermann has to say Monday.

Dig deep, Keith. You'll find something.

It's funny how a guy who puts Vicks Vapor Rub under his eyes in order to elicit phony tears holds a "Restore Honor" rally.

I also think it's funny that you point out Sharpton's "us versus them" theme. That's Beck's entire schtick! Now, he may not have done it at this particular rally (I don't know for sure one way or another) but that's how he's made his career.

I'm going to hold a "Restore pompadours" rally myself. (My hair is thinning, to put it mildly.)

Lance,

The Beck event was a success. His speech was great. There was no vitriol. It raised over 5 million dollars for children of soldiers killed. Sharpton on the other hand kept talking about "them" and "they". It was divisive. How nice it would have been if Sharpton and his crowd had joined in at the Lincoln memorial.

I get it that you don't like Beck, but his career just took off today.

I'll take you at your word. Perhaps Beck actually did do something good today. I did already state though that I think that Sharpton made a mistake.

Martin Luther King is Becks hero? You, Gary, say that you are a Christian?
Do you actually know what Mormons believe?
MLK was a true Christian. Beck believes that Jesus is the brother of Lucifer, that he lives on another planet as a human being, that God is a human being living on another planet and Satan lives among us as a human being. I think we found him, it is Beck.
I cannot believe how stupid people are.

Ingrid,

I am not a Mormon. Yesterday's event said nothing about Mormonism.

He doesn't have to say anything about mormonism, just being one shows how misguided he is. So why should anyone believe anything he says? His master is Satan, the Bible calls "the father of the lie".

I never thought I'd be defending Glenn Beck, but I believe there will be Mormons in heaven. Glenn might even be one of them. God can forgive stupidity and narcissim, and Beck probably has many years in which to repent, or even just mellow out.

I am reminded of a young man who was sent to investigate whether Seventh Day Adventists are truly Christian. His final report was "I think we will see them in heaven, but boy, will they be surprised to see us!"

You know you're a closet Calvinist when you find yourself objecting to the hymn, "When we all get to heaven."

Beck openly admits that up to 10 years ago, his life was a wreck.

Conversations like this make me glad to be an atheist.

I've been looking over the photo you posted. One line across the near end of the photo, I count 60 heads in one row. If the crowd is ten rows deep, that would be about 600. Easily multiply that by ten on EACH side of the reflecting pool, that's a good 12,000. Liberally construe how many more are at the far end, or out of sight of the cameras, I'd say 15,000, an outside possibility of 20,000.

Not bad, but hardly half a million, and not a reliable expression of what "the people want."

Beck should openly admit that his life is STILL a wreck.
