Rep Paul Kanjorski (D-PA) Steps in it

This little gem came from Rep Paul Kanjorski (D-PA)on Wednesday. Pay close attention to the reaction of the African-American lady behind him as he refers to minorities and "defective" people.

Well, it seems that my posting of the article by Dr Frances Rice of the National Black Republican Association today was quite timely.

Red Herring.

Its obvious what the Rep is talking about. It is also obvious he is setting aside a laundry list of Republican stereotypes. I could have done it better, but then, I don't spend all day in his office with a stream of hundreds of people coming in for help. I commend him for trying to help.

Now, perhaps we should get rid of the terminology "minorities" entirely. The term "national minority" was invented in the Soviet Union in the 1920s to end patronizing Eurocentric terms such as "natives." It wasn't too bad, in its time and place. "Minority" is not a particularly good reference for either social identity or ethnic oppression. After all, the darker-skinned population of South Africa was an oppressed MAJORITY.

As for black Republicans, as the father of the former black Republican representative from Oklahoma said, black people voting for Republicans is like chickens voting for Colonel Sanders. That is unfortunate, but its a bed the Republican Party made, and they are still lying in it. Now, if we could restore the ORIGINAL, circa 1870, meaning of "black Republicans," that would be progress.
